About
The Full Story
Nathan Burton Phillips is a South African-born tattoo artist whose approach to ink is defined by authenticity, skill, and heart. Raised in Pretoria, he spent his early years enveloped in a family renowned for artistic expression—be it painting, sculpting, or sewing—and was encouraged to explore without boundaries from a very young age.
He began his tattooing journey with a traditional apprenticeship in 2009, where he “paid his dues” learning foundational skills before honing his style. Driven by curiosity and an unrelenting work ethic, Nathan spent years studying at conventions, watching masters at work, and consuming seminars by legends like Andy Engel and Nikko Hurtado over and over.
Today, Nathan’s artistic ethos defies strict categorization. He describes his signature as “Neo-Realist-Post-Abstract-Minimalist-Pointillism” — or simply, art. Versatility is key; his work spans black-and-gray realism, delicate portraiture, mandalas, sacred geometry, expressive stippling, and even bursts of vibrant color when the design calls for it.
In 2021, Nathan made the bold move to the United States with his fiancé, navigating a challenging visa process, leaving behind home, and rebuilding life anew. As of now, he works in the U.S. with aspirations of obtaining permanent residency and continuing his dream.
Nathan prides himself on craftsmanship that lasts—it’s not about trends or social media virality, but creating tattoos that both he and his clients will be proud of now and decades later. Honest and authentic, he brings a direct, no-nonsense approach paired with patience and deep respect for every canvas he works on.
He is also expanding beyond skin—delving into 3D sculpting, art prints, and apparel under his NP-ART brand, carrying the same precision and personal touch.
